Video: Exhibition Of Floral Collage And Batik "The Second Life Of Flowers"

Holding the exhibition of floral collage and batik by the Training Center "Floreal" on the border of summer and autumn (from August 31 to October 3, 2010) was chosen very well. No matter how bright the colors of the golden autumn are, summer is nevertheless sweeter. So short that you always want to extend it, take the aromas and the beauty of flowers with you in winter. And if it is easier with smells, they can be preserved in fragrant infusions, dried fragrant petals and bunches of greenery, then only memory … and art can capture beauty. Therefore, the exhibition in the Darwin Museum was named "The Second Life of Flowers".
The exhibition presented the works of the floristic collage studio, which has existed for several years. A considerable part of the exposition was made up of works by the teacher, Olga Robaten, made in the batik technique. Batik itself is a gentle, “warm” art, it is made on a soft woven base. Plant motives often prevail in it. But Olga Robaten's batik has its own "zest" - from her own technique of multi-layer application of paints to the inclusion of at least a little floristic materials - dried and skeletonized leaves ("Autumn", "Domes", "Apple Spas"), coconut fibers ("Autumn"), painted gravel ("Fruit Paradise", "Dereva", "Toad"). This technique makes the work even warmer, more natural, more needlework.
As the great I. Goethe correctly noted: "Nature gives us flowers, Art will weave them into a wreath …"! The art of floral collage allows you to do this literally, including in your creative work not only herbarium material, air panicles, but also fancy twigs, seafood and pebbles, and even the salt of our planet - particles of the earth.
There are many techniques for floral collage. This studio welcomes the presence of several plans, or layers, in the works, as in the computer program Fhotoshop. Collage always becomes more interesting if it acquires three-dimensionality, perspective, depth through artistic techniques. This is not a flat piece of painting, made in compliance with the capricious laws of composition, but a piece of nature, our environment, always leaving intrigue for the imagination, what's next, behind the canvas? For example, the work "Monastery" has three planes - tree trunks are made with ink and gouache, against their background - a panorama of the monastery, in the foreground - dried twigs.
As a canvas for a painter, the background serves as the basis for working with floral material. It is created in the studio using different techniques - decalcomania (monotype) by imprinting a picture from glass, which sometimes gives unpredictable effects (E. Ivanova, "Autumn"); priming with clay using the technique of the German master Friedhelm Raffel, with whom "Floreal" closely cooperates ("Another reality", "Spring thaw patch", "Waiting", "Levkoy branch", "Spring landscape", "Play of shadows", "Calla lilies", "Dense forest"). Any techniques come in handy here - both craquelure ("Lace", "Autumn" by M. Tolkacheva), and the wax technique known to everyone from school experience, when ink is applied to a sheet of paper with a rubbed candle and a drawing or texture is scratched ("Swabian Alps", "Night", "Nightingale Night").
One of the author's developments is a background of structured paper, the folds of which, when painted, form interesting textures ("Apples in Bloom", "Etude with Hydrangea", "Tide"). A new word in the world of collage is the use of mat and subordinating it to the task of introducing an additional layer and volume to the work. Moreover, a mat may not only be in the form of a familiar frame ("Game of Forms"), but also represent the contours of flowers or animals ("Owl").
The next stage, after creating the background, enters the multi-layered chord of the collage, the tonic of nature, carefully looking for a stable place in the empirical composition of the background. Dried and skeletonized leaves and flowers ("Flowers in the frame", "Spring fantasy"), various twigs and straws, touching umbrellas and panicles ("Summer rain", "Autumn", "Lilac fog"), bark and lichens (Panel "Autumn"), seashells and pebbles ("Salt of the Earth", "Beginning of the Universe", "Tide"), natural and artificial fibers ("Lilac fantasy"). Occasionally - and other floral accessories, for example, glass beads marbles ("Cosmos", "Autumn fantasy").
The techniques used by the students sometimes go beyond the established techniques - here in the foreground is a paradise tree made of painted unbaked clay ("Paradise apples"), and the background, decorated with leaves, is laminated with film. Noteworthy is the work of "Poppies" by Ivanova E., where floristic materials, on the contrary, make up the background, and in the foreground - painting with special paints on glass.
As it should be in art, collages turned out to be very different. There are color associations ("Lilac Fantasy"), and emotional responses ("Joy", "Nostalgia"), and even applications for the seriousness of paintings ("Old Town", "Tsaritsino", "Colors of Manhattan", "Memories") … However, the main theme of the works is related to the environment, which is most organic for works made from natural materials: landscapes, motives of different seasons, the brightest embodiment of natural beauty - flowers ("Irises", "Poppies", "Callas") and their fluttering similarities - butterflies ("Butterflies", "Butterfly Wings"). And also - inspirational impressions of the great nature, exciting travel and vivid impressions.
