Da Lat is the capital of Lam Dong province, located in the central highlands of Vietnam, 308 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Dalat is comfortably located on the Langbang plateau at an altitude of 1475 meters above sea level. One of the possible translations of the meaning of his name is "the river of the Lat tribe", after the name of the people who once inhabited these places. During its not so long history, Dalat has acquired several unofficial names: "Little Paris", "City of Eternal Spring", "City of a Thousand Flowers", "Swiss Alps in Vietnam".

Dalat was built by French colonialists looking for salvation from the summer Vietnamese heat. The history of Dalat's development dates back to 1887, when the French physician and scientist Alexander Yersin recommended that the colonial authorities establish a resort here. In 1907, the first hotel appeared here, and the general appearance of the city was formed by 1917.

Today's Dalat is, first of all, a high-mountain resort, a favorite vacation spot not only for the local population, but also for foreign tourists. The unique climatic conditions made it so: the temperature here, as a rule, does not rise above +26 degrees and does not drop below +10, due to the location of the city surrounded by numerous lakes, waterfalls, evergreen coniferous forests and natural parks. Even when the rainy season comes to Vietnam, it is almost always sunny in Dalat. Hence, Dalat acquired the name of “the city of eternal spring”.

In its architecture, Dalat resembles an old French town (it was not for nothing that the French built it!), In the center of Dalat you can even see an exact copy of the Eiffel Tower - albeit quite tiny. This is how Dalat got the name "Little Paris". It is just fortunate that during the war with the United States, the city, by tacit agreement of all parties, practically avoided serious destruction.

Dalat is located on the unusually picturesque hills covered with pine forests. Various types of conifers grow throughout the city, pines, araucaria and cedars are especially common here. This riot of green is "diluted" by "coral trees" or "erythrina - cockscomb", the bright red inflorescences of which resemble drooping cockscombs. The city, abounding with parks and flower gardens, looks unusually festive. Walking along its winding paths, whimsically winding between buildings, is an indescribable pleasure.

Dalat is a city of a huge number of hotels, cottages and villas, built in a variety of architectural styles. This mix of styles gives the city a special charm and unforgettable flavor. Some of the villas are built entirely of wood and very much resemble chalets in mountainous Switzerland. This is where the secret of yet another name for Dalat is revealed - "The Swiss Alps in Vietnam".

The favorable climate is conducive to gardening. The local industry is mainly represented by enterprises engaged in the production of plant products, because almost all European flowers, fruits and vegetables can be grown in Dalat. The French once began to grow grapes here, and today they make the best wine in Vietnam according to French recipes. The most famous brand of Vietnamese red dry wine is Dalat Superior. It is he who is served to foreign guests of Vietnam at official state receptions and meetings of distinguished guests. Coffee plantations are also the legacy of the French colonialists. Today coffee has become one of the favorite drinks of the people of Vietnam. They even invented their own way of cooking it.

Dalat is famous for its rich year-round harvests of strawberries and mulberries, and, of course, for its flowers - orchids, hydrangeas, fuchsias, roses, lilies, camellias. Vietnamese petunia is also famous in the flower world for its improved properties. Among the roses grown in Dalat, the most famous varieties are Rosa Dalat, as well as Princess Grace of Monacc and the yellow rose of Josephine. Dalat has become a major Vietnamese flower producer and exporter in recent years - more than 500 million flowers are shipped annually to many countries in the region, including Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand. It is in Dalat that major flower exhibitions are held, both local and international. Another name of Dalat is connected with this fact - "the city of a thousand flowers." Flowers in general play a very important role in the life of every Vietnamese, fresh flowers can be found literally everywhere and on any day of the year. Many cities in Vietnam even have special flower markets that open before dawn so shoppers can buy the freshest flowers to decorate sacred ancestral spirit altars, living quarters, restaurants, offices and shops.

From the existing abundance of flowers, the Vietnamese emphasize four types: magic orchids, magic lotuses, scarlet inflorescences of a blooming peach and beautiful chrysanthemums, these types of flowers symbolize the four weather seasons in Vietnam. Vietnamese people decorate their homes with these flowers so skillfully that even professional florists will find something to learn from.

Dalat can proudly boast of its sights - both natural (lakes and waterfalls, pine groves and coffee plantations, vineyards) and architectural and cultural. We will take a short walk through the famous "Flower Park" of Dalat.

The elongated alleys of the garden invite us to get to know and admire its inhabitants better. Here we have pink and white flowers of the representative of the caper family - cleome, and here terry calendula varieties "Geisha" conquer with their size. Petunias in cheerful flocks color the canvas of this huge floral painting. Lush bauginias (an orchid tree from the legume family) reign in the alley of trees, and the alley of vines will simply amaze you with luxurious specimens of Mysore tunbergia from the acanthus family. Multicolored brunfelsia bushes from the nightshade family perched along the paths of the park, not only decorating them with their lilac, white and bluish flowers, but also making a tangible contribution to filling the air with a delicious aroma.

But the undoubted favorites of this flower kingdom are treelike hydrangeas, fuchsias and orchids. In specially built greenhouses equipped with water supply and ventilation systems, you can admire all kinds of orchids, the most incredible shades and colors. In total, about 2,500 orchid species grow in Vietnam. The richest collection of precious and rare orchid species of Vietnam can be seen in Dalat. The greenhouse of cymbidium alone can drive even the most jaded flower gourmets crazy. It contains a variety of varieties of this largest and most famous of the orchid representatives of Southeast Asia - with cream, beige and salmon inflorescences. In this kingdom of beauty and tranquility in the shaded rooms of greenhouses majestic orchids are blissful, comfortably positioning your stems in chunks of coke tree trunks or arranging them in terracotta pots with lots of vents.

Bonsai of all types and sizes are also comfortably located both in the open areas of the garden and in its greenhouses. All kinds of bizarre "designs" you can see here! Can be viewed for hours! In general, the art of growing dwarf adult trees is one of the characteristic traditions of the culture of Vietnam. The commercial cultivation of bonsai employs a very significant number of the population. In Vietnam, bonsai can be found in almost every home everywhere, even in some very simple hut at the entrance there will definitely be some pot of bonsai. Bonsai is an indispensable element in the decoration of hotels, shops and offices.

Having come to Vietnam from Japan, bonsai has undergone significant changes and today the Japanese and Vietnamese bonsai styles are quite different from each other. In Vietnamese bonsai, there are three times more trees than in Japanese, and the style itself is freer. Vietnamese bonsai uses tropical trees that are not placed in the ground, but on miniature rocks, the roots of the plant are submerged in water that is constantly in a pan, which makes watering easier.

Visitors to the Park of Flowers can buy flowers in all sorts of forms in trade pavilions - in the form of seeds, bulbs, sprouts, or buy already flowering plants in pots, and for a very, very modest price.

In addition to flowers, there are many fountains in the park, as well as various animal figurines made from natural flowers. The Flower Park descends like a living carpet to Xuan Huong Lake, which is the final touch of this fantastic landscape.

The whole of Dalat amazes with such greenery and cleanliness that you will not find anywhere else in Vietnam. If we add to this the complete absence of sweltering heat and the purest mountain air, it becomes clear why this city has become a favorite vacation spot for many foreign tourists and the most magical dream of all Vietnamese lovers - Dalat ranks first in Vietnam by the number of weddings.
