This wonderful park is located in the center of Hamburg and very close to the train station. It's easy for a tourist to get to it. The name "Planten un Blomen" speaks for itself - "Plants and Flowers". Actually, this is the old territory of the botanical garden, which is both public and very beautiful park. From May to September, the park is open to visitors completely free of charge, from 7 am to 11 pm.

As a city garden, it began its existence in 1930, when the zoo began to be relocated. By 1934-35, under the guidance of the landscape architect Karl Plomin, a plan for the park was proposed, which, after some changes, has survived to the present day. From that moment on, the park got its name.

Three International Flower Exhibitions, held here in 1953, 1963 and 1973, significantly changed the appearance of the park. But the most active work on the development of the park landscape began in the mid-80s of the last century. In 1986, the banks of the ponds were re-equipped, 1988-1990 the Japanese garden acquired its present appearance.

Harmony and tranquility reign over 47 hectares in the heart of Hamburg. Lush blooming flower beds are spread, paths winding among thickets of beautifully flowering shrubs, among numerous small ponds and waterfalls, and a marvelous view opens from secluded benches and languid sun loungers in the middle of the emerald lawn.

The park consists of two large parts - the southern and the most interesting, in my opinion, the northern part, where the main interesting places from the point of view of a lover of plants and landscape delights are located. But I want to warn you right away that you will not find labels with names familiar in botanical gardens there. In general, what you recognize, you recognize, there is no one to ask.

But exotics are interspersed here with well-known plants and therefore the feeling of one's own botanical illiteracy does not arise. Rhododendrons and irises, daylilies and berry trees, horned weeds and plane trees, pansies and wisteria, hosts and comfrey, ferns and lavender delight the eye depending on the season.

The Japanese garden is unusually good, especially in the spring, when all kinds of rhododendrons bloom. It was designed by a Japanese landscape architect, so it was a Japanese garden with a very picturesque landscape and a large number of traditional plants, and not its stylization.

It includes all the attributes of Japanese gardens: conifers, lots of stones, slopes, paths, Japanese maples, lanterns, waterfalls, and, of course, a wonderful house for tea ceremonies with a veranda overlooking the water surface of the pond. The Japanese garden hosts a host of themed events, from a tea ceremony to a Korean drummer show, from learning Korean calligraphy to reading Japanese fairy tales to national music.

In 1993, a classical style rose garden was laid out in the park. Unfortunately, in the spring, when we visited this marvelous place, the roses were just getting ready for their grand entrance, but the scale and style were already clearly visible. The garden occupies about 50 acres, on which about 300 varieties of roses of all groups and from around the world are concentrated. In particular, there are historical roses, English roses, park and wild roses, hybrid tea roses, climbing roses, garden and standard roses. In some areas, roses are planted in combination with boxwood. The visual center of the pink kingdom is an elegant pavilion. Here you can find information on growing and caring for the queen of flowers.

The pharmaceutical garden is a labyrinth, wandering through which visitors gradually move from one pharmacological group of plants to another: cough, stomach, calming and diuretic. And, of course, a pharmaceutical garden in Germany cannot do without a herbal section.

There are plenty of recreational activities here - from clowns, mini golf and ponies for children to restaurants and performances by symphony and military bands for adults. But all this is accompanied by a lot of botanical and educational work. The garden's website lists activities for the entire season. So, whenever you come, you will find something interesting and informative.
