Plantarium-2014 Exhibition

In autumn, the Plantarium-2014 exhibition was held in the city of Boskoop for the 32nd time. As you know, this city and its environs have long been the center of Dutch nursery. Boskoop developed from the settlement of Ten Bussche, founded in 1204 by one of the Dutch counts Willem I. In 1222, the Rheinsbürg Abbey became the owner of Boskoop. The abbey decided to increase its supply of trees and shrubs, forcing the farmers to grow more plants than they needed for their own needs. From the 15th to the 17th century, more and more trees and ornamental plants were grown in the vicinity of the city, and from the 19th century Boskoop began to export its products.

Opening the next season, this traditional exhibition sets the tone for the development of the gardening industry for the year ahead. This time more than 300 participants from different countries of the world presented their collections of plants for the consumer market. At least 20,000 international visitors were able to enjoy the atmosphere of this trade fair.

The main feature of the Plantarium exhibition is the widest thematic coverage, from production to wholesale, retail and export of plants. First of all, this event is of the greatest importance for all producers of planting material.

Traditionally, the main events of the exhibition were a number of interesting novelties of various plants, 20 thematic mini-gardens, the latest developments in the sustainability of seedlings, as well as a demonstration of various technological innovations in the field of plant pruning, irrigation systems, weed control methods and much more.

At the exhibition, as always, the best of the presented plants were selected, and awards ceremonies were held in various nominations. It must be admitted that the selection of the jury clearly shows the fashion of recent years - the popularity of plants with dark flowers and, most importantly, foliage. According to the results of the professional jury of the competition, the medalists were:

Gold Award "Best in Introduction":

The Takarazuka Fresa campsis is a very compact hybrid, only 60 cm tall, which is unusual for this plant, with bright orange-red flowers and dark green foliage.

Nandina homemade "Magical Lemon & Lime" is an unusual novelty for this species of plants, thanks to yellowish-green leaves, which turn green in bright sunlight.

And one more brilliant bronze medalist of the exhibition a little later.

In addition to the professional jury, at the exhibition, according to tradition, there was also a jury, which consisted of horticultural journalists from Europe: Denmark, France, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Spain, Sweden, Great Britain, Switzerland. Usually we choose two winners of the exhibition - the best plant of the exhibition and the best proposal in the "Concepts" category.

And here are the results of the work of the journalistic jury. This year, Clematis "Maria Sklodovka Curie", developed in the Marchinsky kennel, received the main prestigious Press Award. The most beautiful variety with abundant snow-white flowers was also awarded a bronze medal in the professional competition of new varieties, this is he - the brilliant bronze medalist I mentioned above. This is a great success for the Polish nursery, which for the second year in a row can boast of receiving the main award of journalists (last year this award was given to Clematis "Diamond Ball").

Also, the journalistic jury considered that the plant-n-relax concept was both original and practical. This is a special package - a tube containing a rose seedling with a clod of earth and a complex fertilizer necessary for planting it. This product from the Danish company Roses Forever is very convenient, fashionable and customer-oriented, it also meets all the requirements of online sales, which also allowed it to receive the PressAward in the category "Best Concepts".

And now a few words about the most interesting novelties presented to the public in different areas of the gardening industry.

Poor presented a series of fragrant edible herbs at the exhibition, which are organic products grown in environmentally friendly conditions using only pure organics.

A novelty presented by the Belgian company Fruithof, the so-called “family tree”, was a great success at the exhibition. This is a fruit tree sapling on which 5 different varieties are grafted, self-pollinating each other. These options are available today for apple, plum and cherry. These plants have a prolonged harvest period as different varieties ripen at different times. Fruiting begins at a fairly young age, and regular pruning keeps the plant small.

An interesting solution in the field of vertical gardening was presented by one of the Dutch companies participating in the event, supplying perennial plants to Japan for arranging flowering walls. In particular, in the city of Tokyo, you can see a rainbow wall, for which heuchera with leaves of a wide variety of colors were used.

In addition, during the press tour, we were able to see the options for vertical gardening, which have long been common in Holland itself.

This plant became an absolute hit of the exhibition (of course, it is already known, but for the first time we pay attention to this form and qualities of the plant). Dwarf delosperma, a ground cover, drought-resistant plant with increased (up to -20 ° C) frost resistance and flowers with an amazing variety of colors. In the exposition one could see orange, purple, pink, white and many other colors of the flowers of this plant, which will certainly find its use in landscaping patios, roofs, and rock gardens.

In conclusion, I would like to show those 20 thematic mobile mini-gardens, presented by well-known manufacturers of planting materials and designers, which became the center of the exhibition and attracted the attention of both visitors and journalists. These small fragments of gardens will surely give an impetus to your imagination in arranging your own garden, which was the goal of the organizers of the Plantarium exhibition.
