In 2018, the famous Plantarium exhibition moved to a new location and worked under the same roof with the large GROEN-Direkt sales area, but the region of the exhibition remained the same - the Dutch city of Boskoop. The exhibition reduced its work to 3 days, canceling the so-called consumer day. The program of events was tightly organized, which made it a purely business exhibition for professionals, and statistics have confirmed this. The event was attended by 11,000 people, 25% of whom were from abroad, of which Germany (19%), Belgium (13%), Italy (11%), England (10%), France (10%)), among them - the owners of enterprises in the industry (40%), employees (30%), buyers (16%), sales managers (14%).

The participants highly rated Plantarium-2018, first of all, in terms of the number of visitors (score 7.1), the quality of visitors (7.7) and the connection with the GROEN-Direkt trading platform (8.3). The statistics of the business component looks like this: the percentage of participants who received orders directly - 48%, established new contacts - 78%, confirmed existing contracts - 94%. Let me remind you that in 2015 the Ticket2Boskoop rule was introduced for the first time, i.e. the opportunity to visit together the "nursery fair" and the exhibition, and the huge trading floor GROEN-Direkt. And in 2018, Plantarium and GROEN-Direkt merged under one roof, which made it possible to present to the public the largest international green business event - a platform where trade and production are combined into an integrated business.

At the 36th Plantarium exhibition, 95 new products were presented, of which 88 were accepted for consideration by a professional jury, which ultimately chose the winners from 63 plants. According to the jury, this is a good figure. Unfortunately, a number of participants were forced to withdraw their applications due to various unforeseen or formal reasons. The judging of new products is carried out by a professional judging committee from the Royal Garden Society of Boscoop. Traditionally, the jury awards gold, silver and bronze medals, but in addition to these awards, it determines the absolute winner - the best novelty of the exhibition.

The best novelties of the past are also traditionally planted at the entrance to the Plantarium. Here plants can count on the attention of absolutely all visitors, and, in addition, everyone sees these plants in terms of decorative and practical value when planted in open ground.

Buddleja David (Buddleja davidii) « ROCKETSTAR the INDIGO », represented by the Dutch company Valkplant BV, was selected as the absolute best news Exhibition Plantarium 2018. The jury particularly liked the original and innovative combination of properties of the plant. This shrub has a very leafy, very dense shape and small growth. It is distinguished by the unusual contrast of dark green leaves and the warm saturated color of exceptionally large inflorescences, composed of beautiful flowers of a dark blue (indigo) shade with an orange eye. The plant is very hardy, tolerates low temperatures, constantly blooms from early summer to autumn, universal use in the garden.

Morrow sedge (Carex morrowii) "Everglow" (EverColor) was bred by Fitzgerald nurseries from Stoneyford Co. Kilkenny (Ireland). A beautiful plant that grows quickly without requiring special care, easily maintains its shape throughout the season, ideal for creating dense green walls or borders, thrives in mixed containers, is widely used for indoor gardens. Throughout the season, it has beautiful green foliage with bright orange stripes, as its producers poetically presented, "as if the evening sun illuminates the edges of the leaves."

Echinacea (of Echinacea) « Sunseekers Salmon » was presented by Inno Flora BV. A very beautiful and healthy plant has a compact, dense shape. The jury noted the new flower shape and size for echinacea. The double fringe of the petals adds to the attractiveness, especially the unusual color scheme of all shades of pink, and the large, bright flowers are exceptionally effective even when they start to fade.

Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) « BellaRagazza® Limetta » - one of the expected winners of the competition of new products, the company also owns Valkplant BV. In general, the Bella Ragazza series is a real revolution, the first dwarf hydrangea "Annabelle" in the world! The plant grows to a maximum of 75 cm and has a naturally rounded shape with strong branches. It blooms from early summer to autumn, first, fresh, green "lime" flowers appear, which turn pale white-light green, and then turn green again.

Large-leaved hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) "RoCo Black Knight" (Roco Young Plants BV) has a rich maroon flowers with green veins that blend exceptionally beautifully with shiny green leaves with dark edging. The plant is compact, densely branched, flowering generously.

Clematis (Clematis Viticella Group) « Sportlight » (patens Group is) really looks like a spotlight, as if lit from within. It is a hardy vine with stems up to 2 m tall, but will be much shorter if clematis is grown in pots. It belongs to the group of early large-flowered clematis. It blooms luxuriantly mainly in May-June, after spring flowering requires pruning and re-blooms in summer. The first flowers in spring have 8 petals, then flowers with 6 petals appear. The flowers are large, 8-10 cm in diameter, wide open, delicate lilac-blue shades, with a very light, as if "luminous" middle, the leaves are three-lobed, bright green.

Diervilla brilliant (Diervilla splendens) « KODIAK® of Orange » - a beautiful shrub that is easy to maintain and even grow in shady and dry places. This novelty begins flowering from the beginning of summer, giving new shoots of orange color. Until the very autumn, it pleases with shining colorful foliage and pretty light yellow flowers.

Echinacea (of Echinacea) « the Parrot » fully corresponds to its name. This "parrot" has very bright two-colored flowers - reddish from the center and mostly yellow, with a high dark cone in the center, and the same bright, strong leaves, which always gives the plant a fresh look. Grows about 45 cm tall, blooms profusely, suitable for growing in pots in patios, mixed containers and of course in the garden.

Beautiful new large-leaved hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) " Magical Red Amethyst ". This variety stands out for its carmine flowers and dark green, tough foliage. The very strong, upright and long branches make it possible to use this hydrangea for cutting.

Catnip (Nepeta) " Bokratune " (Neptune) is a versatile perennial, compactly grows up to 20-30 cm high and 20 cm wide. Anywhere in the garden, in a sunny or partial shade, in sandy, clay or chalky soil, catnip will bloom profusely from early summer to autumn with chic, star-like blue flowers. It can be planted as a tapeworm, as a curb plant, or used in mixed containers. The plant is beautiful even when it blooms completely, and its leaves can be used to brew tea.

Photinia Fraser (Photinia fraseri) « the Chico » has beautiful, intense red, bronze young shoots and a beautiful, compact, spherical shape of the bush 30 cm high and 20 cm wide. The plant can be used as a low hedge or mass planting, stand alone, plant or in mixed containers all year round.

And in the tall blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) " Flamingo " the most striking thing is its variegated foliage of whitish-pink and greenish shades. It grows up to about 1 m in height and 70 cm in width, prefers a sunny or partially shady place, peaty or sandy soils, but you need to pay attention that the bush can be colored unevenly and it is easy to damage it.

Clematis (Clematis Viticella Group) « MANDY » (Group is patens) made the list of the winners of new products, primarily for its abundant flowering. It is a hardy vine with stems up to 2 m tall, but will shorter when grown in pots. The first flowers, which appear mainly in May-June, have 8 petals and often have an additional curl, which makes them semi-double. Requires light pruning after spring flowering, and then also blooms profusely for the second time in summer, the flowers already have 6 petals. Flowers 6-8 cm in diameter, erect and wide open, pink-purple, trifoliate leaves, regular green color.

Foxglove (Digitalis) " of Pink Panther is " has flowers, really awesome like "The Pink Panther." This novelty is the earliest variant of the foxglove, blooming in the first year from seed. It is preferable to grow in containers and pots, then the foxglove grows well and constantly blooms until the first frost.

Heuchera (Heuchera) « Silver Gumdrop » stands out among Heuchera unique silver colored leaves, and rich color maroon-red flowers make a complete contrast. It is a strong plant that can withstand extreme weather conditions.

Hydrangea rough (Hydrangea aspera) " Giel " (Goldrush) - "Gold rush". The vibrant golden foliage goes well with purple and white flowers. It blooms in summer, reaches 1.5-2 m in height and 1 m in width, suitable for hedges and as a single plant on a balcony or patio.

Black Pine (Pinus nigra) " Aron " (Summer Breeze) has a spherical shape that easily becomes fluffy. This is bonsai, i.e. the plant grows so slowly and compactly that pruning is unnecessary. In spring, it gives beautiful bright green shoots, and then the needles turn dark green and always retain their color. Virtually no preference for a particular soil type or planting site.

Press Jury Awards

The press prize, which is traditionally also awarded at every Plantarium exhibition, traditionally attracts great attention of the entire international community. The Press Award is presented on behalf of the international community of professional journalists who have worked for many years at the invitation of the exhibition. The press prize is awarded in two categories: garden plants (any application) and concepts. A concept is a new or unique approach to the presentation or sale of plants or green business products that exhibitors believe will become popular in retail and among consumers.

At the Plantarium 2018 exhibition, the press jury consisted of 18 journalists from the following countries: Germany, England, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Poland, Russia, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

And this year our jury was almost unanimous in the choice of both the plant and the concept. The award was presented by the chairman of the jury, Andrea Schenck, a professional journalist for Gadot - Das Gartenbau from Germany.

In terms of plants, the winner is Ficinia " Ice Crystal ", a novelty with a very modern look. A desert plant native to South Africa, which in Japan was called "ice crystal" for its unusual color and special thin hairs along the edges of the leaves, as if the plant is covered with frost. Great option for a small garden or balcony.

And in the category of concepts, the entire jury was delighted with a very obvious proposal, very easy to use and very convenient for consumers. " Triple beauty ", literally translated "triple beauty", fully reflects the content of this concept - a beautiful combination of three colorful perennials and herbs in one pot.
