Our "green future"

It's finally really smelling of spring, which means a new gardening season is just around the corner. Today we traditionally refer to the GrootGroenPlus-2018 exhibition of "green business", which for the 28th time has demonstrated the latest trends and technologies in nursery farming. It takes place in the Dutch city of Zundert, the area around which is known for the fact that, due to the exceptional natural conditions, there are a large number of Dutch nurseries, specializing in trees and shrubs for alleys, hedges, large-scale green construction.

At GrootGroenPlus, the gardening art of Dutch nurseries and plant material of exceptionally high quality are always on display. Also, much attention is paid to the demonstration of equipment for nurseries. The exhibition was held under the motto “The future = green”, which I would freely translate, regardless of all the rules, “The future will definitely be green”!

Another Belgian family business , DIGIFLOR BVBA, has been operating since 1900. Before World War II, this mainly concerned the cultivation of azaleas and rhododendrons, during and after World War II, when the export of plants was impossible, the enterprise switched to growing vegetables. Since 1960, the cultivation of begonias has been introduced. And already from the beginning of the seventies the nursery switched to a wide range, the main plants of which were azaleas and rhododendrons. Today the total area of the enterprise is 5 hectares, of which 2 hectares are occupied by greenhouses. The company's motto is quality, uniformity and continuity.

And of course, as always, on this press tour of the exhibition we were accompanied by representatives of the Royal Gardening Society Boskop (KVBC). Today, it is this organization that is engaged in international cooperation, testing new varieties and promoting Dutch plant collections. It was their idea to organize a Road-show so that the best novelties of the exhibition of different years would not be forgotten. The chairman of the society, Helma van der Lowe, presented a medal to one of the plants - a dwarf variety of the oval-leaved privet "Green Diamond".

One of the most interesting meetings was organized in the press center itself. Meteorologist and climatologist Rainier van den Berg addressed the journalists. The climate is changing, more and more countries are suffering from very hot summers, lack of water, and these changes are rapid. He answered the question of what plants are recommended for widespread cultivation today in order to mitigate these negative factors. The main idea is simple - it is necessary to plant more trees, and this despite the fact that for the Netherlands there are a little fewer such problems, because a huge number of plants are already grown here and 80% of the territory has a good irrigation system.
