Nikitsky Botanical Garden (NBS) counts its history from 1812. From the moment of its foundation, the daily painstaking work of its employees contributes to the accelerated development of agricultural production in the south of Russia based on the introduction, acclimatization, selection and widespread distribution of fruit, flower, decorative, essential oil, medicinal and other useful plants, the study and active use of local plant resources.

NBS is the ancestor of such branches of Russian agriculture as viticulture, essential oil crops, tobacco growing, southern ornamental gardening, southern and subtropical fruit growing.

Nikitsky Botanical Garden is the owner of more than 1150 awards, 70 of which were received at international exhibitions, including pre-revolutionary ones.

In 1962, the State Nikitsky Botanical Garden was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor of the USSR. And in 1995, in honor of the Nikitsky Botanical Gardens, a minor planet in the asteroid belt was named No. 4480 - "Nikitibotania".

Today, the botanical garden in Yalta is the largest repository of the species and varietal diversity of southern fruit crops in our country, including more than 11,000 varieties of peach, apricot, cherry plum, cherry, apple, pear, quince, fig, pomegranate, olive, ziziphus, persimmon and other cultures.

Here are collected unique collections of decorative woody and herbaceous plants, numbering more than 6,000 species, and the richest varietal and shaped collections of more than 250 botanical species of essential oil, medicinal, aromatic plants. For the first time, more than 400 species of new plants were introduced into culture, more than 800 varieties of cultivated plants were bred and transferred to the national economy.

Its unique Arboretum (arboretum) brought the Garden worldwide fame. Here, on an area of more than 40 hectares, collections of woody plants of the world flora are concentrated. More than 2 thousand species of trees and shrubs are represented in the parks of Arboretum.

The botanical garden has an olive grove, a palm alley, a cork oak grove, and a black bamboo grove, in which many rare plant specimens from all over the world grow.

And in the Montedor Park, which stretches all the way to the sea, you can visit the cactus greenhouse, which contains a collection of 2,000 species of cacti and other succulents, as well as syringarium and a clematis garden.

Nikitsky Botanical Garden as a monument of landscape art is a living museum and a green treasury in the open air. The botanical garden displays a rose garden, a chrysanthemum area and an exposition of flower crops. On the territory of the botanical garden, several unusually bright flower festivals take place every year: in April - "Tulip Parade", in May - an exhibition of irises, in June - daylilies, June-July - an exhibition of roses and cannes, and in October-November - "Ball of Chrysanthemums" …

The Tulip Exhibition, one of the most visited events of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden, annually hosts thousands of floriculture professionals and simply flower lovers.

Tulips have been grown in Nikitsky Garden for more than two centuries, from its very foundation. NBS scientists have been engaged in serious breeding work on tulips since 1961.

The 2018 flower parade is attended by 73,650 tulips, twice as many as in the previous one. In all its spring splendor, guests of the exhibition are ready to admire simple early and double early tulips, triumph tulips, Darwin's hybrids, simple and double late, lily-colored, green-flowered, parrot, fringed, Foster and Greig tulips. All classes of modern garden tulips are participating in this spring's parade.

This year, the botanical garden staff "woven" into this brightly scented carpet of 3,323 square meters and other bulbous plants: almost 6,000 daffodils of various shapes, sizes and colors and about 1,000 flowers of xyphyum and hazel grouse. 32 varieties of daffodils of various groups: tubular, large-crowned, double, cyclamen, jonquillia, tacetny, split-crown and even unpretentious poetic took part in this spring parade. 10 species and varieties of hazel grouse, including varieties of imperial hazel grouse, also proudly represent their bulbous group. There was a place in the floral pattern and biennials: viola, daisies, forget-me-nots and smolens.

The 2018 Tulip Parade exposition is made in the form of a stylized giant flower of eight petals. Each petal is created from tulips of different varieties and groups, but of the same color and shade. The palette is presented in white, crimson, orange, red, apricot, pink, purple and yellow. Each petal of a fabulous flower is dominated by one numerous variety of a contrasting color in relation to the main color, which is presented along almost its entire length.

The breeders of the Nikitsky Garden this year present more than 250 varieties of tulips, 72 of which are new varieties of foreign and domestic selection. There are three new varieties among the new varieties of the NBS breeding: "Garden of Happiness", "Gold of the Scythians" and "Flame variety". And of the 20 varieties of daffodils presented at the exhibition in the NBG, 9 are shown for the first time. In general, this year's exhibition collected about 300 varieties, species and varieties of spring flowering bulbous plants.

The tulip exhibition always starts at the peak of flowering and lasts about a month. Tulips bloom gradually, each flower lives for about 12 days, although there are varieties in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden, the flowering of which lasts up to three weeks. Of course, like any open-air flower exhibition, the duration of the exposition strongly depends on the weather, if it's hot and sunny, then tulips fade faster. The tulip parade will last until mid-May.

With the end of the annual Tulip Parade, of course, the work of the breeders does not end. To date, the scientists of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden are working on 135 varieties, from which breeders select the most interesting. Several new products are already at the stage of passing the state examination. The modern collection of NBS tulips includes 506 varieties.
