Halloween is a fun and terrible holiday that is very popular in many Western countries and is slowly moving to us. This is an ancient Celtic holiday, historically celebrated in the lands of modern Great Britain and Northern France, where it originated, on the night of October 31 to November 1 (in Russia - from October 30 to 31). A large pumpkin with a mouth and eyes cut out and a candle inserted inside, called the Jack Lamp, is a symbol of Halloween and its main attribute, associated with the Irish legend of a man named Jack, who twice deceived the devil, and when the day of reckoning came, he did not get into hell, not heaven. Since then, Jack has been forced to wander the world with a pumpkin instead of a head. But today we want to talk not about the holiday itself, but about its indispensable character - Pumpkin.

A great nurse and healer, the pumpkin is not arrogant in character and generous in nature. It is not for nothing that in the folklore of many peoples she received such an affectionate and cozy name - a red-haired fat woman.

The Pumpkin family includes more than 100 genera and about 400 species of herbaceous annuals and perennials, lianas, shrubs with fruits of various sizes - from small to gigantic. The bulk of pumpkin plants are wild plants, for which humans have not found use, and only about two dozen species have become cultivated plants. Among them, the title of queen is rightfully taken by the pumpkin. And it is no coincidence that the whole family of vegetable plants so beloved by us is named after her, without which we can no longer imagine our life - scientists are inclined to believe that pumpkin is the ancestor of most pumpkin plants. Relatives of pumpkin are cucumber, squash, squash, melon, watermelon and many exotic plants - sikana, trichozant and others.

Academician N. I. Vavilov, on the basis of his large-scale expeditionary botanical and geographical study of the diversity of cultivated plants, established the centers of origin of vegetable crops. According to this study, the three types of gourds - hard-bore, nutmeg and fig-leaved - are of Central American origin - the countries of Central America, including southern Mexico. As for the large-fruited pumpkin, it has Andean roots, was born in the mountainous regions of Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador. It is also known that in 1926, in North Africa, an expedition led by Vavilov discovered a wild-growing small-fruited pumpkin. By the way, watermelon is also of African origin.

Pumpkin, it turns out, is mentioned in the Bible. So, at least, say scholars who are involved in the clarification and interpretation of Scripture. In their opinion, the pumpkin has been growing in the Holy Land since its creation. The mention of her is found in the Old Testament. It was the gourd that was recognized in the plant, which "rose above Jonah, so that there was a shadow over his head and to deliver him from his grief." But whether this is really so is not known for certain.

And when did the pumpkin appear in Russia? After all, if you consider that it is called a primordially Russian vegetable, then, apparently, a long time ago. The history of the pumpkin goes back centuries. It is believed that it appeared in our country in the 16th century. Where it came from exactly, it is quite clear - from Europe. But in what ways is unknown. It is believed that from the east, together with Persian merchants who came to Derbent, Astrakhan and other cities for trade. According to the second version, it was brought by Moscow merchants, who began to trade with the countries of Western Europe in the 16th century, because by that time pumpkin was very popular in Europe.

It became widespread only since the 18th century, when they looked closely at it and tasted it. The pumpkin turned out to be so unpretentious, productive and retaining its properties for a long time after harvesting, that it simply could not but grow. Indeed, pumpkin is a very plastic plant, that is, it perfectly adapts both to the southern, warm regions, and to the northern, cold ones - without it, one cannot imagine a vegetable garden in the Non-Black Earth Zone of Russia, although this is a zone of risky farming.
