Melon has a huge number of varieties: only in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation there are almost 130 zoned varieties and hybrids of melon, of which more than 45 are recommended for all climatic zones. For widespread cultivation in suburban and personal plots, the following are recommended:

In the Southern Federal District, melon can be grown via seedlings and direct sowing. In the rest, the seedling method is preferable.

In order for the melons to be on the table as long as possible, one or two plants of early or ultra-early varieties must be grown (fruits are stored no longer than a week), two plants are medium early, three are mid-season (stored for about 3 weeks) and three to four (except for areas located above 59 ⁰ N) - medium late (lie 2-3 months).

In the temperate zone, late-ripening varieties and melons of southern origin have time to ripen if you prepare seedlings grafted onto a squash or pumpkin. In the middle lane and Siberia, seedlings are planted in late May - early June on a warm manure bed under a double temporary film shelter or in a greenhouse. If there is no organic matter, you can prepare deep and wide holes, put in a bucket of compost filled with complex fertilizer, spill it with hot water, cover the bed with a film or non-woven material, press it down with bottles of water. In place of the holes, make cuts and plant seedlings in them, and protect the bed from above with a second sheet of shelter.
