When autumn comes in nature, many plants begin to prepare for winter, responding to reduced daylight hours. It is important for each of them to properly organize wintering in advance, this will be the key to good growth and flowering next year.

Some species completely lose the aerial part and winter in the form of tubers and bulbs. You cannot cut off the still green stems and leaves of these plants! Nutrients from them go to underground organs, providing reserves for the winter.

Tuberous callas and begonias, gloxinia and achimenes have the first signs of retirement:

new buds cease to form,

  • leaves begin to dry and turn yellow, various spots may appear on them,
  • the soil dries out longer.

With the onset of withering away, and it does not always occur at the same time (the timing may fluctuate slightly depending on summer weather conditions), you should cancel all dressings, gradually reduce watering until it is completely canceled, and regularly remove dried flowers and leaves.

After about a month, the tubers are freed from old soil, remnants of dry leaves and roots, treated with a tank mixture of a fungicide and an insecticide (for example, Maxim + Confidor), dried, sprinkled with sawdust, peat or vermiculite. Tubers of begonias, gloxinia, rhizomes of Achimenes are placed in open boxes or paper bags and stored in a refrigerator at a temperature of + 10 … + 15 ° C or left to winter in a pot, placing it in a cool place (for example, next to a balcony door). Calla tubers are stored at a temperature of + 5 … + 7 ° C for 2.5-3 months.

Gloxinias and tuberous begonias of the first year, as well as young Achimenes, do not always have time to build up an underground part sufficient for wintering and do not retire, they should be placed in the brightest place, preferably with backlight, and continue to care for them, as in summer.

Hippeastrum does not require an obligatory rest period for flowering with complete loss of leaves. If the plant remains green in the fall, place it in a warm room on the lightest windows, preferably with additional lighting in the winter, continue feeding at half the dose. It is better to do this with weak specimens that did not have time to recover well over the summer. In order for the plant to accumulate enough nutrients for the next flowering, the minimum growing season should be at least 6-8 months.

The dormant period for hippeastrum is arranged for a more predictable flowering time. Watering in the fall is reduced to a minimum, without bringing the substrate to complete drying so that perennial roots do not die. The temperature is reduced to + 13 … + 17 ° C. Approximately 2-2.5 months after retirement, the hippeastrum may wake up and release a flower arrow.

Bellflower

Bellflower

In other plants, partial death of the ground part is observed.

The bellflower is uniform from October (after the end of flowering) to February plunges into dormancy. Shoots are shortened to him up to 3-5 cm above ground level. Provide a cool content in a bright place at a temperature of + 4 … + 10 ° C with limited watering, however, not allowing the soil to completely dry out.

Fuchsia should hibernate in cool conditions at + 10 ° C. At a low positive temperature, about + 5 ° C, wintering is possible in the dark, in a cellar or basement, with good ventilation. Before rearranging the plant there, shorten the stems to prevent rotting, keep the soil slightly moist, not allowing complete drying out. In the case of warm winter content, complete or partial loss of leaves and elongation of fuchsia stems are observed, which greatly depletes the plant.

Deciduous species that grow in temperate climates, such as pomegranate, figs, mulberries, lagerstremia, ginkgo, Syrian hibiscus, palmate maple, large-leaved hydrangea fall into deep sleep in winter. For these plants, autumn leaf fall is the norm. After the complete loss of leaves, we remove them in a well-ventilated (possibly dark) room with a low positive temperature (+ 1 … + 5 ° С). We water rarely and in moderation, we maintain the soil in a slightly damp state, it should not completely dry out so that the roots do not die.

For subtropical evergreens, such as citrus, myrtle, melaleuca, eucalyptus, tryptomena, leptoospermum, chamelacium, oleander, laurel, olive, rosemary, nandina, ivy, koleonema, azalea, adapted to the annual drop in temperature during the short days, winter rest in cool conditions is required. Its absence will deplete the plants; flower buds will not form in the warmth. Increasing illumination with artificial light without lowering the temperature in winter for these plants does not always give a good result. It is better to keep such species as container plants, from spring to autumn - on an open balcony or in a garden, and in winter - in a cool light greenhouse or on a frost-free balcony, at temperatures from +5 to + 12 ° C, providing for 10-12 hours a day with bright light. Top dressing from mid-October should be completely canceled until spring. The frequency and abundance of irrigation decreases compared to summer.

Azalea

Azalea

For one or two small plants such as cacti, azalea, chrysanthemum, rosemary, or myrtle, a cool winter can be arranged in the room. Press the entire perimeter of the open side (top) of the transparent container or old aquarium against the window glass, place the plant in the resulting small closed chamber. The temperature inside will be kept a few degrees below room temperature.

For several plants, for example, a collection of citrus fruits, for a cool winter, you can put a high, not lower than the plants themselves, a screen (preferably made of transparent materials: plexiglass, polycarbonate or ordinary glass), fencing one of the windowsills from the heat of the battery and the warm air of the room. The narrow space between the window pane and the partition will also be somewhat cooler than the rest of the room.

For a large number of plants that need a cool wintering, it is necessary to equip an insulated non-freezing loggia, a terrace in a country house, or prepare a greenhouse.

For tropical plants, winter rest is not physiologically determined and is not obligatory; wintering for them is quite simple to organize. When favorable conditions are created - bright daylight hours for about 12-14 hours in a warm room, they will continue their growth. Watering is left at the summer level, and the dose of fertilizers is reduced by 2 times. However, artificial light is not always capable of completely replacing natural light, and in case of insufficient lighting, it is better to suspend the growth of such plants by a slight decrease in temperature, keep them at + 16 … + 18 ° С, reducing watering and canceling all feeding. Winter rest in unfavorable conditions will help the plants conserve strength for flowering.

Spathiphyllums, monsters, philodendrons, anthuriums, scindapsus, saintpaulias, columnias are placed on shelves or shelves under illumination far from opening windows, they are afraid of winter drafts and cold window sills.

We also protect codiaums, leeas, hibiscus, Benjamin's ficuses, dracaena plants from cold drafts and place them only on insulated windowsills. To avoid chilling the roots, put thermometers on each windowsill closer to the glass and check the temperature regularly. Without waiting for severe cold weather, insulate the windows. The flow of cold air can greatly cool the pots, when the soil temperature drops to + 10 ° C, the roots cease to absorb water, which leads to a loss of turgor by the leaves, and with prolonged cooling - to root diseases. If the lump is sufficiently moistened, and the leaves are drooping, do not water the plant, sprinkle the crown with warm water several times, place it in a greenhouse or under a hood, transfer it to a warm place so that the pot warms up and the roots are restored. Lift on small stands (wood, foam or cork) pots on the floor and window sills, this will save them from cold drafts. Install artificial lights directly above the plants.

Roses and bougainvillea winter better under illumination in cooler conditions, at + 10 … + 15 ° C, this protects the rose from severe tick damage, and bougainvillea from exhaustion. A decrease to + 5 ° C is also permissible for these plants, they will shed their leaves, but at a temperature of + 10 ° C they will begin to grow again.

Losing leaves in the fall is not normal for evergreens! With leaf fall in such species (citruses, ficuses, myrtle are especially prone to this), we immediately take measures to improve conditions, without waiting for the bare branches.

Read more in the article Autumn leaf fall in indoor plants.

We begin in the evenings and in cloudy weather to supplement the illumination with artificial light of the required intensity; the duration of daylight hours for most plants is 12-14 hours. At night, the light should be turned off - plants need a mandatory dark period.

In living rooms, it is better to use ordinary household fluorescent or white light LED lamps. Their spectrum is quite sufficient for wintering plants. Special phyto-lamps can be used in non-residential premises, their light is unpleasant for the eyes. And the efficiency of such lamps does not always justify their high cost.

Place the lamps directly above the plants at a height of about 10-20 cm. Make sure that the leaves do not touch the lamps, especially the basement parts, and do not get burned. It is more expedient to use long tube-shaped LED and fluorescent lamps on the shelves. Above a shelf 120 cm long and 30-40 cm wide, it is enough to hang one 120 cm 40 (36) Watt fluorescent lamp, or one 21 (19) Watt LED lamp, for especially demanding light types - 2 such lamps. Individual plants can be placed under a table light with compact bulbs that screw into standard sockets. The lamp should hang as low as possible, but so that the crown completely falls into the circle of light. To illuminate large-sized trees, you can use the wall sconces suspended above them, regularly turning the plant relative to the incident light, tall floor lamps or ceiling lights directly above the plant.

Attention!!! Turning on the backlight in the fall, you should remember about the plants of a short day, in the fall they naturally have favorable conditions for laying flower buds. Such species do not need to extend the daylight hours, but on the contrary, it is necessary to protect them from any source of light in the evenings. It is only necessary to provide sufficient light intensity during the day. Therefore, Kalanchoe, Schlumberger, Poinsettia, Elatior begonia are illuminated only in the afternoon in cloudy weather, then by the New Year we can expect their flowering.

Kalanchoe Blossfeld
Kalanchoe Blossfeld

Kalanchoe Blossfeld

Kalanchoe Blossfeld for flowering must be kept for 6 weeks at a temperature of about + 18 ° C and a day of light no more than 10 hours.

Schlumberger is kept at a temperature not higher than + 22 … + 24 ° С for 6-7 weeks with a day length of 9-10 hours, or at a temperature of + 10 … + 15 ° С for the same 6-7 weeks.

Hatioru - with a longer dormant period than Schlumberger's (at least 50 days, and for some varieties up to 100 days) - in winter for this period it is necessary to provide coolness (+ 10 … + 15 ° С). At a temperature of + 10 ° C, the setting of flower buds will occur regardless of the length of daylight hours. At a temperature of + 15 ° C, it is imperative to observe a short daylight hours (8-10 hours). At temperatures below + 8 ° C, the formation of flower buds may stop.

Poinsettia in room conditions from the first days of October at 12-14 o'clock (from 6-8 o'clock in the evening and until 8 o'clock in the morning) is hidden from light in a dark cabinet, under a dark bag or lightproof box.

In elatior begonia, short daylight hours (less than 13 hours) stimulate the formation of flower buds. Providing it with intense light in the fall for 10 daytime hours, you can expect winter bloom.

With the onset of the heating season, it is necessary to take care of the increase in air humidity in the premises. Spray the leaves or air near the plants frequently (2-6 times a day), hang wet towels on the batteries.

When using humidifiers, keep them away from plants. The released cold steam freezes the leaves, small white burns appear on them, as well as from the frosty air from the window.

In the fight against spider mites, which often attack plants due to dry indoor air, use a regular shower. Thoroughly washing the leaves on both sides, this will help get rid of a large number of pests without using chemicals. Cover the soil from excess moisture or combine the shower with the time of the next watering.

In early autumn, it is necessary to free up space in greenhouses or prepare temporary shelters for the autumn keeping of plants on the street (frames with a film). Here you can leave an azalea for another month or two ; it needs cool conditions to lay flower buds. From October to December, keep the temperature + 6 … + 10 ° С, and with the onset of cold weather, bring the plant to the greenhouse or to the frost-free balcony.

On the balcony, close the frames, leaving only those that serve for ventilation. Provide good ventilation on cool loggias to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Most often, plants are affected by gray mold - extensive dark spots with a visible gray down are formed on the leaves, stems and other parts of the plants. If a disease is found, treat it with a fungicide. In cool autumn conditions, a black bloom can be seen on the leaves of some plants - this is a sooty mushroom. It settles on the sweet secretions of leaves, is not a parasite and is not dangerous for plants. It is enough to wipe off the plaque with a damp cloth dipped in soapy water.

Cymbidium hybrid
Cymbidium hybrid

Cymbidium hybrid

Cymbidium after summer active growth goes to rest. To lay flower stalks, he needs a cool period, with a temperature of + 16 … + 18 ° С during the day, and +10 … + 12 ° С at night. The temperature difference during the day should be at least 6 degrees. Watering is reduced.

With the end of the dacha season, families move to the city, taking with them the indoor plants that spent the summer in the garden. Before bringing them home, carefully examine them for diseases and pests, treat them with a wide spectrum of systemic insecticides (Aktara, Konfidor, Mospilan, Apache, etc.) in order to prevent fungal diseases. Gold, Horus). Remove damaged leaves and branches, cut off heavily overgrown decorative deciduous specimens. Pruning flowering plants in the fall can knock down flowering next year.
