Every year more and more gardeners are fond of tree peonies. This is not surprising, since growing them is not more difficult, and sometimes even easier than everyone's favorite roses. Tree peonies are shrubs with a height of 1-1.5 m with large beautiful flowers of various colors.

You can't walk by in the store

In shopping and garden centers in the spring there is a very large selection of tree peony seedlings. They are usually packed in colorful boxes. Such peonies can be planted with the onset of warmth, starting in mid-April.

If you bought such a seedling, and it is too early to plant it in open ground, it is better to keep it in the refrigerator on the lower shelf, wrapped in newspaper. If, nevertheless, the buds started to grow, you need to get a peony, plant it in a pot using a commercially available universal flower soil, water a little and put it in a bright cool place.

With the onset of warmth, we prepare a landing site. If, for some reason, the place for the peony is not ready (you must first transplant the plants or construction work is underway), then the tree-like peony can spend the summer in a pot, dug in with a slight deepening (3-5 cm) in a semi-shady part of the garden. From the beginning of September, such a peony must be transplanted into the ground by the transshipment method, along with an earthen clod.

Still, I believe that the tree peony is best planted in the fall!

Benefits of vaccination

The tree-like peony propagates by dividing the bush, layering and seeds.

There is also a method of grafting tree peony cuttings onto the root of a herbaceous peony. With this method, we get flowering in the 1-2nd year and increase the frost resistance of the tree peony.

We plant for a long time

Tree peonies are unpretentious plants. With proper planting and care, they will delight you and decorate the site for many years.

We carefully choose the place for the tree peony. You can plant it both in a sunny place and in an openwork shade. The main thing is that there is no stagnation of water, this has a bad effect on the root system. The distance between the peonies must be at least 1.3 m.

For planting tree peonies, I prepare the following mixture:

a bucket of fertile land;

  • a bucket of mature compost (humus);
  • a bucket of river sand;
  • 1 cup of universal fertilizer;
  • 1 cup dolomite flour (for acidic soils)
  • 1 tbsp. a spoonful of copper sulfate;
  • 200 g bone meal;
  • 1 glass of ash.
  • Whom to bury, who - not

    At the bottom of a pit of the appropriate size, you need to pour a part of the prepared mixture, tamp it a little, place the peony root on a flat surface.

    We plant our own rooted peonies at the level of the root collar. Above at the base of the bush, you need to pour fertile soil.

    We plant the grafted peonies with a depth of 10-15 cm. Top up with the remaining mixture.

    We water the plantings abundantly and mulch the trunk circle. Mulching protects the roots from drying out, and there is no need for frequent loosening around the planted peony. As mulch, you can use cut dry grass, humus, river sand, wood chips and other available materials.

    Water the planted peonies as needed - not often, but abundantly.

    A little about leaving

    Periodically pour wood ash, bone meal into the trunk circle, followed by loosening.

    • 2-3 times per season we feed with mineral fertilizers with a low nitrogen content, with a predominance of potassium and phosphorus.
    • We carry out preventive treatments against pests and diseases.
    • In the spring, we treat the bushes with fungicides, for example, Bordeaux liquid.
    • Remove damaged and broken shoots in young bushes.
    • We form adult bushes and cut them to a living bud. I do this pruning in late spring when the swelling buds are visible.
    • In autumn, in regions with an unstable climate, it is necessary to protect young plantings. To do this, we put arcs or wooden supports on top of the bushes, carefully cut off the leaves, pour a little leaf litter into the base of the bush, sprinkle with earth and cover with agrofibre in 1-2 layers. We carefully pull the branches of an adult bush and put a support. This is necessary so that they are not broken by melting snow.
