Garden and park economy "Frunzenskoe" (St. Petersburg)

The concept of the project "Labyrinth-Ornament"

The main attention is paid not to color, but to the texture and beauty of the flower garden pattern. The main material for creating the labyrinth is always blooming begonia, and light stone chips filling the gaps between the stripes of flowers give contrast and well emphasize the overall pattern.

Visitors, looking at this relatively small flower garden, will be able to mentally go on a walk through the maze.

Arboretum "Lorberg" (Germany)

The concept of the project "Sicilian Garden"

(I place in the nomination "Interactive maze")

The LORBERG tree nursery demonstrates the project "Sicilian Garden in Prussia" using topiary forms (garden dimensions - 20 x 15 m).

This project clearly demonstrates the possibility of harmonious use of various forms, types and textures of planting material. Analogs of such landscape compositions can be found in many historical gardens. In this case, the famous Sanssouci Park served as a historical prototype.

The composition consists of the following elements: molded hedge, standard linden, oak arches, linden arches.

The center of the garden is occupied by a swimming pool, from where you can see the wooden sculptures in the shape of a cypress (artist Stefan Pitriga), installed on 3 sides in the depth of the arches.

The central part of the composition is decorated with four chestnuts imitating columns. The ornaments inside the garden are made of flowering annuals.

Agency "Trifem" (France)

The concept of the project "North Star"

(I place in the nomination "Labyrinth-symbol")

The North Star labyrinth reminds of the history of the founding of the Northern Capital - St. Petersburg in 1703, when, at the behest of Tsar Peter I, the city was built on moss bogs.

But "North Star" is also an allusion to the mutual ties between France and Russia, and to the flattering name given by Voltaire to Catherine the Great.

With this labyrinth, the author of the project sought to identify some key moments from the history of the city's construction.

The plant walls of the labyrinth are based on moss, and mirrors and pools remind of the presence of canals - real water labyrinths reflecting the splendor of the city.

Group of companies " Ananta "

The concept of the project "… I love you, Peter's creation!"

The composition is a recreation of a wooden fragment of the Labyrinth bosquet of the Summer Garden.

After his acquaintance with the park of Versailles, Peter the Great became unusually carried away by the arrangement of the Labyrinth in the Summer Garden.

The Labyrinth Bosquet of the Summer Garden consisted of a system of paths surrounded by green walls, in the deepening of which there were trellis niches with fountains. A total of 30 fountains were installed with sculptural groups representing characters based on the plots of Aesop's fables. At the entrance to the garden stood a gilded statue of Aesop himself.

The sculptural compositions of the Labyrinth bosquet existed until 1777, when almost all the elements of the Labyrinth were destroyed by a great flood and storm, and since then the Labyrinth ensemble of the Summer Garden has not been recreated.

Committee for Improvement and Road Facilities of the Government of St. Petersburg

The concept of the project "Symphony of Life"

(I place in the nomination "Ornamental labyrinth")

The project presents a flower labyrinth - an ornament.

The idea of the labyrinth is the unity and struggle of opposites. Compositionally, the exposition consists of two parts. With the same structure, the labyrinths have different solutions, both in terms of color and semantic load.

The drawing of the labyrinth is based on the symbolic ornamental figure "meander". The composition consists of two ornamental labyrinths located on either side of the central path.

In one case, flowers of blue and blue shades are used to create an ornament (ageratum, viola), for the second labyrinth, flowers of red and orange shades are used (viola, petunia, etc.). Such a flower palette will allow, with the same structure of the labyrinth, to obtain a contrast solution, which is additionally emphasized by two sculptures installed in the center of each labyrinth and having an opposite emotional and semantic character.

For a better visual perception of the labyrinth pattern, the height of the flower beds increases from the center to the periphery of the circle, forming a funnel in the center, in which a vertical sculptural composition is located.

The labyrinths are "tied" to each other by a floral design and a path, in relation to which they are located slightly asymmetrically for a consistent understanding of the composition as a whole.

The flower arrangement is made of flower plants in pots, meander paths are made of marble chips on geotextiles, vertical landscaping elements are made of prefabricated frame modules.

The concept of the "Little Prince" project

(II place in the category "Interactive maze")

A new format for reading the parable-fairy tale of Antoine de Saint-Exupery - the interactive labyrinth "The Little Prince", will acquaint the visitors of the playground with the philosophical tale of the famous French writer.

The landscape project is an architectural form with play paths. For decoration, a painting is performed - a drawing depicting fragments of the plot of a fairy tale, the Little Prince's travels around the planets.

Brief philosophical statements are spelled out in the text for better understanding by parents and children:

"You are forever responsible for everyone you have tamed."

  • “Only the heart is sharp-sighted. You cannot see the most important thing with your eyes "
  • "There is such a firm rule: I got up in the morning, washed myself, put myself in order - and immediately put your planet in order."

    Landscape studio "Sakura" (St. Petersburg)

The concept of the project “Your Way. Between East and West "

(II place in the category "Interactive maze")

The interactive labyrinth "Own Path" invites its visitors to follow the path of development of the thought of landscape architects through various styles of park construction.

The labyrinth allegorically represents the difficult path of finding your own style of Russian landscape design. In order to go through the maze, it is necessary to move across the paved paths and avoid the dead ends of stereotypical landscape solutions.

Passing the maze involves finding a way through the "East" and "West" parts. Dead ends represent common practices in various styles of park building.

Various groceries in the "Eastern" part of the labyrinth garden are filled with deep symbolism inherent in the oriental garden. A site in the "Eastern" part of the labyrinth with a "dry landscape", a bridge and a "deer scarecrow" is a common motif in the theme of a Japanese garden.

The "western" part of the labyrinth is planned in a regular style. Garden sculpture, flowerpots and garden furniture convey the mood of different eras in the development of landscape architecture in Europe.

In order to pass from one part of the labyrinth to another, it is necessary to go across the obvious direction of movement, which is an allegory of the most promising development of landscape architecture in Russia.

The central node of the labyrinth is a passage from the "Western" part to the "East", made in the form of two arches symbolizing East and West, set opposite each other and covered with mirrors, thereby creating the illusion of a false passage in the labyrinth.

The concept of the project "Mystery of the Spirit"

(III place in the nomination "Labyrinth-symbol")

    By the very road

    A clear stream runs

    Shady willow.

    I thought, just for a moment, -

And now, I stand for a long, long time.

The project attempts to reflect the classical interpretation of the labyrinth through the form of the Japanese tradition, using the Karesan-sui technique.

The connecting link is a single concept of symbolism, inherent, to a greater or lesser extent, to any kind of art. The symbolism of the labyrinth in its classical interpretation, as a reflection of the spiritual search for the personality, was expressed through the mystical philosophical feeling conveyed by the traditional Japanese "Rock Garden".

Gravel, sand or other inert material is traditionally associated in the "Rock Garden" with the flow of water. The stream of water (a labyrinth laid along the perimeter) in this project symbolizes the river of life, and the islands of stones, framed by a labyrinth, are the most significant points of a person's spiritual growth.

It is not by chance that the number of islands was chosen - seven. The semantics of this number is reflected in many philosophical, religious and mystical schools. So, in Christianity the number seven is a symbol of creation, in a mystical concept - a person has seven subtle bodies or sheaths of the higher "I". According to the Holy Scriptures, seven is a perfect number, it rules the world and space. In the aspect of this project, the number seven, rather, personifies the Christian seven sins, or rather, the negative manifestations of the human person, which she realizes and overcomes during her life.

To create the project, marble chips, stones, wooden flooring around the perimeter are used. It is possible to organize the movement of spectators around the composition (along the wooden flooring), which will make it possible to examine the drawing of the labyrinth in more detail.

The concept of the project "Northern Labyrinth"

The northern stone labyrinths are one of the most difficult archaeological mysteries. There are still no unambiguous interpretations of the practical purpose of the labyrinth.

The labyrinth is conceived as a metaphorical passage to the other world, which exists in parallel with us. Somewhere in the depths of their souls, people know that he is and that their happiness and peace await there.

Moving between the twists of a stone spiral, walking through the labyrinth must close his eyes and withdraw into himself, without being distracted by the world around him. A person will stumble and fall, but then his feet will learn to feel the way. Each time, making an almost complete, however, and not closing circle, he, moving along the labyrinth, will involuntarily pass through various states of consciousness.

In the labyrinth, they often receive answers to deep questions, or advice in the form of direct knowledge, as well as individual knowledge about themselves. The central place in the labyrinth is ideal for meditation and revelation; the time of being in the center of the labyrinth is individual.

Everyone who dares to go through the labyrinth will discover its secret for himself.

    Lattice of the Mikhailovsky Garden
    Lattice of the Mikhailovsky Garden

    Lattice of the Mikhailovsky Garden

The design solution combines the idea of a labyrinth and the classic forms of a flower parterre. The fun garden puzzle, so characteristic of the palace parks of the gallant age, is embodied in new material. Instead of green trellises, evergreen box and yew borders, flowers will be used.

The scheme of the labyrinth was created based on the drawing of the grate of the Mikhailovsky Garden, located on the side of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ ("Savior on the Blood"). This fence (architect A. Parland) is one of the brightest decorations in the garden. Large forms of the labyrinth located in the eastern part of the garden will overlap with the plasticity of the lattice on its western border. The elegant rosette swirls resemble the figures of the classic split parterre on an enlarged scale.

Such parterres with a floral pattern and a background of sand were in some cases intended for walks, and in their essence were very close to labyrinths. Therefore, the merging of the parterre and the maze will be quite organic.

Similar carpet flower beds could be found in later historical periods. Ornamental flower beds made of low plants with a pattern of curls or geometric shapes were popular in the late 19th century and later until the 1930s. Many gardens and squares of St. Petersburg were decorated with similar arabesques and parterres, sometimes very complex in design and color composition.

The composition is based on a classic sod maze. In the center of the labyrinth there is a blossoming apple tree, symbolizing the tree of paradise. A passage under an arch made of blooming apple trees is a pass to paradise. Fresh apples blush on the green concentric circles of the labyrinth, now moving away from the center, now approaching it. Who will bite off the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil?

Starting your way in the Labyrinth of Events, We don't know what we're going to go through

(III place in the "Interactive maze" nomination)

Labyrinths of sheared yew in the castles of aristocrats, decorative flower gardens in the shape of a spiral - all the external forms of the existing labyrinths were abandoned. Light shines through the red panels. These panels remind of the revolutionary flags in Russia, of the new, revolutionary aesthetics.

This labyrinth, with its winding paths and dead ends, symbolizes the development of our revolution and subsequent history.

At the entrance to the labyrinth, sailors, girded with machine-gun belts, check the credentials of those wishing to enter. Unlike other times, they give those out to everyone without restrictions and free of charge. The mandate with the mark of the visit remains with the visitor as a keepsake.

And even dead ends in a maze are not just a place where you have to turn around and go back. Benches are installed in dead ends so that a person can sit, think, make a decision - to do what is so necessary at all the turning points in history.

The concept of the project "Four centuries of Elagin Island"

(III place in the nomination "Ornamental labyrinth")

The composition represents more than three centuries of history of the park art of Elagin Island. Starting from the 18th century, when Elagin Island was a typical example of regular park construction in Russia, and up to the 20th century, all styles, trends and ideas characteristic of each of the centuries were reflected in the artistic appearance of the park.

Count I.P. Elagin, one of the first owners of the park, was a member of the Freemasons Society - and Masonic ideas and symbols were visualized in the park; the symbolism of classicism can be traced in the ornaments of park flower beds of the 19th century, the stylistic direction of historicism in the second half of the 19th and 20th centuries was manifested in the decoration of the park, in the forms of flower beds and in the use of exotic plants.

In their composition, the authors of the project strive to reflect both the long-standing traditions of landscape gardening and the rich history of Elagin Island. In the forms of the ornament proposed for the competition, both the Masonic themes of the 18th century, and classical decorative elements, and the characteristic historical theme of carpet flower beds using the historical assortment are presented.

    OOO "Parkovaya Restoration" (Moscow)

The concept of the project "In Search of the Russian Garden"

The main idea of the exposition is to reflect the theme of the search for Russian style in landscape gardening art. The labyrinth primarily symbolizes the difficulty of finding a path, seemingly insurmountable. The task of the exposition is not so much to give a definite answer, but rather to reflect on the question "What are the features of the Russian Garden?"

The composition is a round labyrinth with four rooms. The central round part is made in the tradition of sod labyrinths, concentric paths are interrupted by hillocks on which “hint” objects are installed, symbolizing the keys to finding the style of the Russian Garden - a lone stone, a birch grove and a wooden well. The main route passes by the "clues", one by one inviting to the offices from the trellis lattice.

There are expositions of foreign gardens: Chinese, Arab, European and American. A look at them from the outside can tell what is the peculiarity of the Russian Garden. Thus, the main composition is surrounded by views of the gardens of the world: the oldest gardens of China, medieval Arab gardens, European gardens of the New Age, modern gardens of America. It is in this order - from West to East and from ancient times to modern times - that the travel route runs.

After examining all the clues and "visiting" other gardens in the world, the path leads to the center of the labyrinth, where you can relax on a comfortable bench and take another look at the path traveled.

The labyrinth "In Search of the Russian Garden" is, first of all, a symbol, in which much attention is paid to both ornament and intricacy, which gives it a significant share of attractiveness.

The labyrinth ornament symbolizes the structure of the fortified city: a circular citadel with towers. Inside it - an intricate geometric pattern of paths, a central square and amorphous "landscape" hills. Thus, the ornament itself symbolizes the labyrinth as a city. In the four cabinets' towers there are "trompe l'oeil" depicting gardens, immersing the viewer in the atmosphere of other countries and peoples.

Creative Association "Landscape Miniatures" (St. Petersburg)

Concept of the project of the landscape miniature "Hampton Court"

The idea of the project is the labyrinth of the English Hampton Court Park, known to the Russian audience for the film Three Men in a Boat, Excluding a Dog (based on the novel of the same name by Jerome K. Jerome).

It is one of the oldest surviving British hedge mazes. It was designed by George London and Henry Wise in 1690.

A feature of the presented landscape miniature is the use of the method of modeling and prototyping. The viewer can not only see the appearance of the labyrinth in Hampton Court Park, but also practically feel himself in it.

The layout helps to most correctly understand the composition, shape, functionality, color scheme of objects and their interaction with each other and with the surrounding space. This project is one of the few projects in Russia carried out using modeling and prototyping. This technique allows you to convincingly and effectively convey the atmosphere and spirit of the era of Jerome K. Jerome's contemporaries.

    Steelgroup (Netherlands)

The concept of the project “St. Petersburg. Labyrinth as a symbol "

The historic center of St. Petersburg is like a labyrinth.

It is rather difficult for a tourist from Holland who has come to the city center for the first time to understand it. Not only the length, but also the stunning beauty, and the inaccessible names of the streets on the signs liken the city center to a labyrinth. But this is only until you understand the course of urban development. The silhouette of the Admiralty against the background of the Neva River appears as a kind of landmark. Its gilded spire, towering in the center of the city's axis, points the way through the maze of the city's historic canvas.

This maze is an idea that inspires us to participate. From a historical point of view, the Dutch and the Russians have a lot in common. Shipbuilding, the ports of St. Petersburg and Rotterdam, architecture and urban design, even the plans of these historic cities indicate a close relationship. And the colors of the national flags are the same. Only the arrangement of the lines in the Russian tricolor (white-blue-red) differs from the Dutch one (red-white-blue).

Association of Young Artists "Green Dog" (St. Petersburg)

The concept of the project of the landscape labyrinth "On the Trail"

The project is a sculptural installation made of climbing plants and various elements of garden and park decor. It is based on the image of a large dog footprint, which in this case symbolizes a labyrinth. In the space of the footprint, a sculptural composition of dogs is established, holding each other by their tails with their teeth, which, when viewed from above, gives the footprint the appearance of an unevenly twisted spiral. The spiral movement starts from the center, forming the idea of passing the maze.

Each dog is a flat sculpture of a wire frame entwined with a plant. Additional decorativeness to the object is given by paths between the rows of dogs, made of colored sand, stones, colored glass.

The composition is positioned at a slight angle to the surface, which makes it more expressive when reading both the graphic and sculptural components of the installation.

"Tv-Tsi" - landscape design workshop (Moscow)

Group of companies "Niagara" (St. Petersburg)

The concept of the project "Garden Mantra (Earth. Water. Spiral)"

(II place in the nomination "Labyrinth-symbol")

The garden project is made in high-tech style, as well as minimalism. The garden is associative. It consists of two similar mini-labyrinths, one located on the ground, the other on the water, and created on the basis of the identity matrix of a large labyrinth. This is the simplest meander - two spirals penetrating each other.

Chinese and Japanese gardens have a great influence on landscape specialists in Europe - their symbolism and sense of the universe. And this project, despite the expressed stylistic modernity, is deeply symbolic.

Three ideas are embodied in the labyrinth. The first expresses the concept of creating any garden - it is a synthesis of man-made materials (elements of rigidly expanded polystyrene in a bright decorative painting) and a natural environment (trees and flowers).

The second idea symbolizes the variability of the world: everything changes - the mood of nature also changes. The garden reflects all seasons: the blue of the spring sky, the pink brightness of summer, the fogs of autumn, winter gloom and again - the blue spring sky.

And finally, the third idea is the eternal dualistic interaction of Earth and Water. Water has two main virtues, or properties - movement (rivers, streams, waterfalls) and peace. And as a result of peace - reflection. The earthen garden-mantra seemed to be reflected in the water … and an island appeared in the form of a water labyrinth.

The Garden Mantra project is an attempt to understand and comprehend one's place in the world, to recognize oneself as a part of nature, and nature as the Cosmos, an attempt to philosophically and aesthetic comprehension of nature, and a search for new ways in the art of creating gardens.
