The garden is the only place where the famous statement of Kozma Prutkov loses its relevance. Here, the opposite is true: if you have a fountain, you need to take care of it and make sure that it does not clog. And if not, then build! Moreover, modern technologies and commercially available standard solutions provide great opportunities for this

One of the classic solutions - a fountain in the middle of a pool or pond - extraordinarily enlivens its surface, creates a center of attraction for all eyes in the garden. Moreover, it refreshes the water by saturating it with oxygen and making it more suitable, for example, for breeding ornamental fish. For the arrangement of fountains on the surface of the pond, special fountain pumps of various capacities are used. There are even models (for small fountains) powered by solar energy! In addition to a pump, a fountain device needs a hose and various nozzles. The water pressure depends on the pump power, and the jet shape depends on the nozzle.

There are nozzles that form a two- or three-tiered fountain, fountains of the “bowl” type, “millstone at work”, “flower” … There are nozzles that create the effect of foaming water, there are rotating ones - there are no more counting.

Let us recall other, non-traditional forms of fountains, for example, the famous Bakhchisarai fountain in the Crimea, praised by Pushkin. As you know, it is an artistically designed source in which water, flowing out drop by drop, alternately fills the shells protruding from the wall, creating a unique feeling of poetic melancholy …

And such a solution is also possible: a fountain-imitation of a natural key gushing from the depths of the reservoir. The principle of such a fountain is that a pipe with a nozzle does not protrude above the surface of the pond, but is submerged to a certain depth. For the construction of this composition, they take a large natural stone, drill a hole in it and insert a hose connected to the pressure pipe into it from below. The pipe is equipped with a tap to regulate the water pressure, with the help of which the most plausible effect of the underwater key is achieved.

Do not forget about the constant companions of fountains - stone and ceramic sculptures, as well as lighting systems. All these are accessories, as they say, for an amateur, but the richness of the range of these products available today allows almost everyone to choose something to their liking.

A stream flows, a stream runs …

One of the favorite hydrological objects in the garden is the stream. There is something inexpressibly charming in the natural smooth curves of a natural stream, in the shiny pebbles sorted by water on its bottom and banks, in the play of sun glare in its living, changeable streams. It is not surprising that both landscape designers and ordinary gardeners again and again try to embody this miracle on their sites. What does it take for a trickle to run through your garden?

The first and main condition is the height difference. Even a very small drop is enough for the existence of a stream, but, of course, the more significant the drop, the more “interesting” the object can be. Take advantage of the natural slope of the terrain, if any; and if not, create it using the soil removed from the pit during the construction of a house or a pond.

A trickle can exist on a site by itself, flowing into a pond, or it can be a component of an entire system of reservoirs: flow out of a pond or a decorative swamp, connect two or more reservoirs together.

When planning how the stream bed will go, keep in mind that in nature streams always flow in smooth bends - “meandering,” as the hydrologists say. To best simulate these "meanders", use a simple technique - put a flexible hose in place of the future stream. Elasticly bending, he himself will tell you the most beautiful loops and bends, which will only have to be embodied on the ground. When planning the width of the stream, do not forget that stones and aquatic plants will subsequently somewhat reduce it.

Artificial streams are constructed in the same way as reservoirs, using special shapes and films. They start by preparing the trench, removing stones and plant roots from the bottom of the trench, compacting the soil and laying waterproofing material. Streams can also be created from clay and concrete, fiberglass mats, but these are more laborious methods.

Water is supplied to the stream by means of a hose, which is laid next to the stream, and a pump, which is installed in the deep zone of the pond. The hose is buried or masked in other ways, but so that it can be accessed at any time. The beginning of the stream can be an artificial key made in a drilled boulder, a composition of stones and a decorative groove.

A film covering is made on the prepared area. In places of bends and convolutions, separate pieces of film are welded together. The film is buried according to the same rules as when creating a film pond. A layer of gravel is poured over the film or other covering, then large pebbles and large decorative stones are laid on the gravel. Several stones. Singly or in groups, they are placed directly in the stream bed to create whirlpools, which, in fact, make the stream babbling.

If the height difference allows and if it meets the stylistic decision, you can diversify the stream bed, creating more or less high ledges in it, from which the water will overthrow vertically down. Following nature, immediately after the ledge, a deepened area is created, where the water can stagnate somewhat, contributing to the growth of marsh vegetation.

The banks of the stream are decorated with boulders and pebbles, and also planted with ornamental aquatic plants - calla, iris, sedges, horsetails, swimsuit, marigold, swamp forget-me-not … During the growing season, the stream overgrows, mosses and lichens settle on the rocks and along the banks, which give the stream a natural decorative look.

What is it making so much noise today?

In a famous anecdote this question was asked by naive natives who lived in the neighborhood of Niagara Falls. Do you want your guests to ask you the same question? The waterfall is one of the most mesmerizing spectacles in the natural world, and it is not surprising that we want to have such a wonder on our site, if the landscape and technical capabilities allow.

The height of the entire structure of an artificial waterfall, as a rule, does not exceed 1.5 m. It can fall steeply or roll down several ledges, for the creation of which a large number of materials are used - from fiberglass to natural natural stone.

When a, it is necessary to provide waterproofing to avoid water leakage. A seal made of film or other hermetic material is arranged under the stone slabs. When laying the film in the profile of the waterfall, make sure that it lies in the form of a trough, and at the edges it is buried so that capillary seepage of water is not allowed.

After work on the compaction of the profile of the waterfall, it is decorated with various types of natural stone. Sandstone slabs look most natural, they are easy to process and can be shaped to the desired shape. A waterfall made of the same materials as the reservoir looks good. Sometimes waterfalls are decorated with artificial slabs.

A submersible pump is used to supply water, which is connected to a hose located on the surface of the waterfall. Water can flow out from under a flat stone that looks like a natural spring, it can bubble or flow down a decorative gutter. When buying a pump, be sure to take into account its power: with a waterfall 1 m high, the minimum pump power is 30-35 l / min. The water supply hose must not be too long. The same as when making a stream. They hide it nearby so that access to it is easy.

The stones, along which the water runs down, will eventually be covered with a green film of unicellular and filamentous algae, hydrophilic mosses will settle on them, of which the most decorative are mniums, reminiscent of emerald twigs with small leaves, ferns and grasses will take refuge in the cracks between the stones … for a couple of years, the waterfall will take the form of a romantically neglected corner of nature …

Everything flows, nothing changes

Please note that all hydrological structures described exist in a closed loop. The pump takes water from the pond, delivers it through a hose to a fountain, stream or waterfall, from where, having delighted our eyes and pleasing our ears, it returns to the pond. Due to the waterproofing, water loss is minimal. Thus, all these structures are quite environmentally friendly: they consume a little water, do not affect the level of groundwater, do not pollute them - all this should please a modern person.

But, of course, nothing beats the joy that the sight of flowing water gives us!
